Eleni and her son Simeon are from Kalamafka, an inland village near Ierapetra on the southern coast of eastern Crete. Their land rises towards the high spine of Crete, and the trees stand on well-drained terraces,fed by spring water.The earth is stonier than in the middle part of the island, more volcanic, the cliffs made of strange rock formations.
Other farmers focus on quantity, Eleni has solved for quality. She talk slovingly of her trees, the inheritance she received from her family which she plans to pass to Simeon, who studies agronomy himself. They consume their own productat home.She’s independent and single minded; as trong woman in the largely male world of olive farming. Simeon brings the latest developments in agronomy to their production. He’s studying the subject at the University of Heraklion. They are the guardians of their trees and they look after their every need.
Elenis known in the area for innovative natural farming techniques.Instead of pesticide she sprays chalky mineral solutions on leaves and fruit to put off pests. She is careful with water in the summer; the olive fly prefers fat, wet fruit. While she doesn’t have full bio certification, Eleni and Simeon use only organic products in their stewardship of their trees.
